Dimethyl sulfoxide is a colorless, odorless, highly polar, aprotic transparent liquid with strong hygroscopicity. Due to its excellent solvency (capable of dissolving most gases, liquids and solids), it is known as a universal solvent. It tends to condense into colorless crystals at low temperatures.
Physical&Chemical Properties
Molecular Formula:C2H6OS
Density:1.1g/cm³
Boiling Point:189℃
Solubility:
It is completely miscible with most organic solvents such as water, ethanol, acetone, diethyl ether, benzene, chloroform, etc.
Chemical Hazards
When heated and burned, it decomposes, forming irritating or toxic fumes and sulfur oxides. It reacts violently with strong oxidizing agents such as perchlorates, strong acids and strong bases. There is a risk of fire and explosion.
